Vertical Extension of a Civil Engineering Building

B.Sc. thesis: a 7-storey steel extension over a 1968 RCC building, without touching it.

Overview

The Civil Engineering building at CUET is a three-storey RCC structure from 1968 that is in constant use. The brief: add seven storeys without retrofitting, loading, or interrupting the original building.

The solution is a structurally independent composite steel frame. New columns rise through open interior spaces and along the perimeter, bypassing the old structure entirely and carrying all vertical and lateral loads down to a new mat foundation.

The design follows LRFD per BNBC 2020, with dead, live, wind and seismic combinations analysed in ETABS 2018, connections checked in IDEA StatiCa, and drawings in AutoCAD. A seismic evaluation of the combined ten-storey building used the BSPP Seismic Evaluation Manual (PWD, Bangladesh) and confirmed it meets current standards.

Highlights

  1. 01

    Independent load path

New steel columns bypass the RCC frame to a dedicated mat foundation.

  2. 02

    Composite steel

Chosen for strength-to-weight ratio and fast construction.

  3. 03

    Seismic evaluation

Full assessment of the 10-storey assembly per the BSPP manual.

  4. 04

    Verified connections

Steel connection design checked in IDEA StatiCa.
